Building Web Skills That Actually Matter
We started teaching responsive design back when it was still a radical idea. Now we're helping people build websites that work everywhere—and teaching the thinking behind it, not just the code.
Talk About Your GoalsHow We Got Here
We've been doing this since mobile websites were "the future." Watching the industry change taught us what matters—and what doesn't.
Started with workshops
Just Callum and a handful of developers trying to figure out media queries in a Birmingham co-working space. Those early sessions were messy but genuine.
Moved to structured courses
After teaching the same concepts dozens of times, we built a proper curriculum. Focused on problem-solving rather than memorizing syntax.
Opened the Stoke studio
Found a space in Talke Pits that felt right. Small enough to keep things personal, big enough to host proper working sessions with real projects.
Refined the approach
Dropped everything that didn't help students get better at building responsive sites. What's left is practical, tested, and actually useful.
Looking ahead
Planning our autumn cohort with some new ideas about teaching layout systems. Same principles, different ways of getting there.
What You'll Actually Learn
We don't teach every framework or follow trends. We focus on understanding how responsive design works, so you can adapt to whatever comes next.
Mobile-first thinking
Start with the smallest screen and build up. Sounds simple, but it changes how you approach layout. We'll show you why this matters through real examples.
Flexible grid systems
CSS Grid and Flexbox aren't magic—they're tools with specific uses. We'll work through when to use each one and how to combine them effectively.
Typography that scales
Text needs to work at every size without breaking. You'll learn spacing, hierarchy, and how to make reading comfortable on any device.
Testing across devices
Browser tools are helpful, but nothing beats actual devices. We'll cover practical testing strategies that catch problems before your users do.
Who Teaches This
We're developers who teach, not professional educators. That means practical experience and honest answers about what actually works.
Callum Fitzwalter
Lead Instructor
Been building websites since table layouts were standard practice. Started these courses because too many developers were learning responsive design backwards. Still writes code every day.
Briar Lindhurst
Technical Mentor
Specializes in making complex layout problems make sense. Worked on e-commerce sites for years before joining us in 2021. Good at explaining why something breaks.
How the Programme Works
Twelve weeks, two evenings per week, in our Stoke studio or online. We keep groups small so everyone gets proper attention. You'll work on real projects—not made-up examples.
Each session mixes instruction with hands-on work. Callum or Briar will be there the whole time, helping when you're stuck. Between sessions, you'll have exercises and a dedicated Slack channel for questions.
